Pastor Paul Krampitz died after his motorcycle was struck by a Chevrolet Impala on Route 9 in Berlin, Connecticut

BERLIN, CT — The community of Berlin and beyond is mourning the loss of Pastor Paul David Krampitz, a cherished figure in local law enforcement and spiritual guidance, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. The collision occurred at approximately 4:14 p.m. on Route 9 North, just near Exit 33, when Krampitz’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle was struck by a Chevrolet Impala.

According to the Connecticut State Police, Pastor Krampitz, 65, was riding in the left lane when the crash took place. The impact was severe, resulting in Krampitz being thrown from his motorcycle. Emergency responders rushed him to New Britain Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet Impala, whose identity has not been released, was at the scene and declined medical treatment. State police are currently investigating the incident and are actively seeking witnesses or video footage to gain further insight into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Pastor Krampitz dedicated his life to service, both in his role as a pastor and as a chaplain for the Connecticut State Police. Appointed on July 3, 2008, by Commissioner John A. Danaher III, he served for 16 years, providing spiritual support during some of the agency’s most trying times, including the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The Connecticut State Police issued a statement expressing their sorrow, noting, “Chaplain Krampitz touched the lives of hundreds of Troopers, Dispatchers, and support staff in his 16 years of service.”

In addition to his role with the State Police, Krampitz served as a chaplain for the Cromwell Police and Fire Departments, as well as the Luther Ridge in Middletown and the Cheshire Police Department. His impact was felt widely, as he offered guidance and solace to those navigating personal and professional crises.

The loss of Pastor Krampitz has resonated deeply within the communities he served. The Cromwell Police Department shared their grief on social media, honoring him as “an extraordinary man who was one of our biggest supporters and friends.” They recalled his comforting words during challenging times: “Even though you may be walking through the valley of the shadow of death, you are ‘walking through’ and will come out the other side.”

Similarly, the Cromwell Fire Department expressed their sorrow, highlighting Krampitz as not just a chaplain, but a true friend and mentor. “His passion for helping others and his deep faith inspired us daily,” they stated.

Beyond his contributions to law enforcement, Krampitz was the pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. He was actively involved in the Lutheran community, having served as the past dean of the Southern and Central Connecticut Conferences. An alumnus of Yale Divinity School and Hartford Seminary, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree, which further equipped him for his role in spiritual leadership.

Krampitz is survived by his wife, Paula, and their three children, Zoë, Zaidan, and Zachary, along with two adult daughters, Christina and Maria. His family and the communities he served are left to mourn the loss of a man who exemplified kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.

Following the tragic accident, Route 9 was closed for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation. The Connecticut State Police continue to collaborate with the driver of the Chevrolet Impala, who is cooperating fully with the ongoing inquiry.
