Former Minden City Councilman Joe Cornelius and daughter found dead

MINDEN, LA – In a shocking and tragic event that has left the community reeling, a juvenile suspect is now in custody in connection with the early Sunday morning double homicide that claimed the lives of a former Minden city councilman and his daughter. The victims have been identified as Joe Cornelius, 82, a beloved figure in the community, and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles.

Minden Chief of Police Jared McIver confirmed that the homicides occurred around 6 a.m. on Sunday at a residence in the 100 block of Austin Street. “We have the juvenile in custody and we’re still gathering information,” McIver said, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing as law enforcement continues to piece together the events that led to this devastating crime.

Joe Cornelius was a well-respected and deeply rooted member of the Minden community. A retired Deputy Ward Marshall, Cornelius had served under Marshall Dan Weaver, dedicating years of his life to public service. His commitment to his community extended beyond law enforcement; he was also a significant political figure, having served on the Minden City Council representing Council Districts A and B. In 2013, following the death of then-Mayor Bill Robertson, Cornelius was appointed mayor by the city council, further solidifying his role as a leader in Minden.

Cornelius was more than just a public official; he was a man who touched the lives of many. Known for his kindness and generosity, he was often seen serving ice cream to the children of the area, a gesture that endeared him to families throughout the community. He was also a comforting presence during times of loss, always on hand to support grieving families. His contributions to the community were numerous, including his instrumental role in initiating local Black History Month observations, a testament to his commitment to honoring and preserving the cultural heritage of the area.

The loss of Joe Cornelius and his daughter, Keisha Miles, has left a deep void in the Minden community. Keisha, who was 31, was known for her vibrant personality and close relationship with her father. The circumstances surrounding their deaths have sent shockwaves through the town, as residents struggle to come to terms with the violence that has claimed two cherished lives.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding the motive behind this senseless act. While details are still emerging, the fact that a juvenile is in custody adds an additional layer of complexity to the case. Juvenile crimes of this magnitude are rare, and the involvement of a minor in such a brutal act raises questions about underlying issues that may have contributed to the tragedy.

According to the National Institute of Justice, juvenile offenders in homicide cases often have histories of exposure to violence, trauma, or instability in their lives, factors that can lead to extreme behaviors. The involvement of a juvenile in this case will undoubtedly prompt further examination of the suspect’s background and the circumstances that may have led to this tragic event.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community of Minden is coming together to mourn the loss of two of its own. Vigils and memorials are being planned as residents seek to honor the lives of Joe Cornelius and Keisha Miles. Their deaths serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the impact that violence can have on a community.

As law enforcement continues its investigation, the hope is that justice will be served, and that the community can begin the process of healing. For now, Minden grieves the loss of a man who dedicated his life to serving others and a young woman whose life was tragically cut short. The legacy of Joe Cornelius will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his contributions to the community will not be forgotten.
