Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Toyota Tundra on LA 23 in Plaquemines Parish

In the early hours of August 28, 2024, a tragic accident on Louisiana Highway 23 resulted in the death of a young pedestrian from Baton Rouge. At approximately 4:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian just north of Seatrain Road in Plaquemines Parish. The incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Kyrin Dotson, a Baton Rouge resident.

Preliminary reports indicate that Dotson was attempting to cross LA 23 when the accident occurred. According to the investigation, a 2004 Toyota Tundra was traveling northbound in the left lane of LA 23 when it collided with Dotson, who was walking eastward across the northbound lanes. The impact occurred in the left lane, where Dotson was struck by the oncoming vehicle.

Tragically, Dotson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured in the collision. As standard procedure, toxicology samples were obtained from both the driver and Dotson to determine if impairment was a factor in the crash. The results of these tests are still pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.

This incident underscores the persistent dangers that pedestrians face, particularly when navigating roadways in low-light conditions. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be prevented by adhering to essential safety practices. Authorities emphasize the importance of wearing light-colored or reflective clothing when walking near traffic, especially at night. Pedestrians are also advised to avoid crossing roadways in areas that are not well-lit or designated for pedestrian use.

Safety experts also highlight the need for pedestrians to assume that drivers may not see them, especially in conditions of reduced visibility. Walking against the flow of traffic, where pedestrians can see oncoming vehicles, is another recommended safety measure. By taking these precautions, the risk of accidents involving pedestrians can be significantly reduced.

The tragic death of Kyrin Dotson serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety for both pedestrians and drivers. In Louisiana, pedestrian fatalities have been a growing concern in recent years. According to data from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, pedestrian-related crashes have seen a steady increase, mirroring a national trend. The combination of distracted driving, poor visibility, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure has contributed to this rise in fatalities.

The Louisiana State Police and other local authorities continue to advocate for greater awareness and caution among both pedestrians and drivers. Public service announcements, community outreach programs, and enhanced enforcement of traffic laws are all part of ongoing efforts to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents in the state.

As the investigation into this morning’s fatal accident continues, the community is left mourning the loss of a young life. The incident serves as a call to action for both pedestrians and drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads. The Louisiana State Police urge all road users to be mindful of their surroundings, particularly in areas where pedestrians and vehicles intersect.
