Jeremy Kirsch, 45, Arrested for Murder of Girlfriend, Elizabeth Gerling, 50

In a shocking development from Utica, New York, a man has been arrested in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Gerling, a respected elementary school principal. Jeremy Kirsch, 45, from Camden, was taken into custody on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, following the death of Gerling, 50, who was the principal of Columbus Elementary School in the Utica City School District.

The grim discovery was made on Tuesday, August 20, when Oneida County Sheriff’s Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a death at 9111 Birch Circle in the Town of Marcy. Arriving at the scene around 10 a.m., authorities found Gerling deceased in her bed. The circumstances of her death were immediately deemed suspicious, prompting an autopsy by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The initial investigation revealed that Kirsch had been present at Gerling’s residence the night before her death, and remained there until the early hours of the morning. Law enforcement efforts to locate Kirsch throughout the day led to his eventual identification by the Rome Police Department. Kirsch was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital for an evaluation.

By the end of the day on August 21, the medical examiner’s office confirmed that Gerling’s death was a homicide, specifically due to asphyxia from strangulation. This conclusion led investigators to further interrogate Kirsch. Following a brief discussion with law enforcement, Kirsch was arrested for second-degree murder. He was subsequently arraigned in Rome City Court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail without bail.
