ELYRIA, OHIO – A tragic two-vehicle collision on State Route 57 in Elyria on Thursday afternoon resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others seriously injured. The crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Griswold Road, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The incident unfolded as a Nissan Altima, driven by a 40-year-old man from Amherst, was traveling northbound on State Route 57. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver of the Altima ran a red light at the intersection with Griswold Road, colliding with a Toyota Corolla driven by a 48-year-old man from Lorain. The Toyota was in the process of turning east onto Griswold Road when the impact occurred.
Tragically, the collision proved fatal for two passengers in the Altima. Tanner Smith, 36, of Cleveland, and Meghan Incorvaia, 36, of Wakeman, were both pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. Neither of the passengers in the Altima was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a detail highlighted in the state patrol’s report.
The driver of the Altima sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota Corolla was also seriously injured and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in Elyria for treatment. Their current condition remains unknown.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an Elyria police officer had been attempting to stop the Nissan Altima shortly before the crash occurred.
