Young couple from Washington drowns in Maui waters

A vacation meant for relaxation and bonding turned tragic for Ilya and Sophia Tsaruk, a young couple from Washington State, as they met a mysterious and heartbreaking end in Maui, Hawaii. The pair, along with their unborn child, died under puzzling circumstances on September 14, 2024, while either swimming or snorkeling near the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, a remote and relatively calm region of the island. The deaths have raised significant concerns and left both their families and the community grappling with questions about how such a tragedy could occur in a location not typically associated with dangerous waters.

The Maui Fire Department and Ocean Safety personnel responded to a distress call around noon, alerting them to swimmers or snorkelers in trouble. Crews were dispatched to the north side of the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, a protected area known for its clear waters and untouched beauty but also for its lack of safety measures such as lifeguards. When emergency personnel arrived, they found Sophia Tsaruk, 26, approximately 100 to 150 yards from the shore. She was unresponsive, and despite CPR efforts by firefighters, she was pronounced dead shortly after being brought to shore.

The search for her husband, Ilya, 25, continued as crews combed the waters. Tragically, Ilya was found on the ocean floor not long after Sophia. Rescue teams attempted to resuscitate him, but their efforts were also unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple’s deaths are a grim reminder of the risks associated with open-water activities, even in seemingly calm waters. They also bring to light the critical need for safety awareness, even in areas that don’t appear immediately dangerous.

What has left many, including the couple’s family and authorities, puzzled is the lack of clear explanation for the drownings. The area in question, located in southwest Maui, is not known for rip currents or particularly rough waters, leading many to wonder how two healthy individuals could meet such a fate in a location considered safe by many standards. According to Chris Stankil, a spokesperson for the Maui Fire Department, weather and water conditions were calm on the day of the incident, with minimal surf, making the drownings even more perplexing.

Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that it’s unclear whether the couple was snorkeling or merely swimming. While the location of their bodies—about 100 to 150 yards offshore—suggests snorkeling could have been a possibility, no snorkeling equipment was found with them. The Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety reported that no masks or snorkels were mentioned in the initial incident report, and there was no confirmation of the couple being part of a commercial snorkeling group. These details contribute to the air of mystery surrounding the circumstances of their deaths.

Another crucial factor is the lack of lifeguards in the area. The Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, stretching from Ahihi Bay to La Perouse Bay, is remote and largely unmonitored, with the nearest lifeguard towers located at Makena State Beach Park, several miles away. The remoteness may have delayed the emergency response and could have contributed to the inability to revive Ilya and Sophia.

The Tsaruk family is now faced with the unbearable task of mourning not only the loss of Ilya and Sophia but also their unborn daughter, who was due in just a few months. The couple leaves behind their 18-month-old son, Logan, who was staying with relatives at the time of the tragedy. Friends, family, and the larger community have expressed their shock and heartbreak, with many turning to prayer and support in these difficult times.

A GoFundMe page was created by Andrey Tupikov, a family friend, to help the family cover funeral expenses and bring the couple home from Hawaii. The page surpassed its initial goal of $100,000, reflecting the outpouring of love and support from the community. “We lost a dear sister and brother, daughter and son, and a beautiful niece,” the page reads, capturing the deep grief felt by those closest to the couple. It also highlights the couple’s deep faith and involvement in their church community. Ilya and Sophia were active members of their church, frequently singing together in the worship group, with Sophia being remembered for having “the voice of an angel.”

While the investigation into the cause of their deaths continues, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the ocean, even in the calmest conditions. The lack of immediate answers only heightens the grief of those who knew and loved the couple, as they seek to understand how such a devastating event could occur without warning.

The community’s focus now turns to supporting the Tsaruk family in their time of unimaginable loss. Funeral arrangements are being made, and the family hopes to bring Ilya, Sophia, and their unborn child home to Washington, where they will be laid to rest. The public’s overwhelming generosity in helping the family during this time speaks to the deep impact Ilya and Sophia had on those around them.

As more details emerge, the mysterious circumstances surrounding this tragedy will likely remain a point of reflection for the community and authorities alike. The ocean, with all its beauty, remains unpredictable, reminding us all of the importance of caution and preparedness, even in the most serene environments.
