Taquajah Page dies after crash during U-turn on I-270 south

In the early hours of Sunday morning, tragedy struck on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 270 in Columbus, Ohio, leaving one woman dead and two others injured. According to the Columbus Division of Police, Taquajah Page, a 30-year-old woman, lost her life in a fatal crash that unfolded at approximately 2:30 a.m. near the junction of Interstate 270 and Interstate 70. The crash occurred in the southern section of the highway, a notorious spot for accidents due to high traffic volumes and dangerous turns.

The details of the incident, released by the Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit, paint a clear picture of how this fatal collision occurred. Page was driving her Mazda southbound on Interstate 270 when she made a sudden decision to execute a U-turn. Her intent was to use the emergency vehicle turnaround area to switch from I-270 south to I-270 north. This particular maneuver, however, is one that is both dangerous and prohibited for civilian drivers as the emergency lane is strictly reserved for authorized vehicles like police and fire department units. Such areas are designed to facilitate emergency responses and to avoid traffic delays, not for regular motorists to use.

While attempting this illegal U-turn, Page’s Mazda veered into the left lane. At that moment, another vehicle traveling southbound struck her car from the left. The force of the impact was so severe that Page was pronounced dead at the scene by medics from the Columbus Division of Fire, just seven minutes after the crash occurred at 2:37 a.m.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision escaped without injury, according to police reports. However, two passengers in the vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The Columbus Police have confirmed that the injuries to these two passengers are not life-threatening, and both are expected to make a full recovery.

This tragic accident has sparked a broader conversation about the risks associated with improper use of emergency vehicle lanes. While the exact motivation behind Page’s decision to attempt the U-turn remains unknown, it underscores the dangers of making sudden and illegal maneuvers on highways, especially at night when visibility is reduced, and reaction times are crucial. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), improper lane changes and illegal U-turns contribute to a significant percentage of highway fatalities each year. In fact, U-turns are considered one of the most dangerous maneuvers a driver can make on high-speed roadways like I-270.

The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the crash to gather more details. As is standard protocol in fatal accidents, they are reviewing traffic camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing both vehicles for any signs of mechanical failure. Toxicology tests will also be conducted to determine if either driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash, although no such evidence has yet been reported.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic laws and understanding the limitations of emergency lanes. While highways like Interstate 270 are equipped with features designed to enhance safety, misuse of these features can lead to catastrophic results. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially during nighttime travel, when visibility and reaction time are diminished.

As Columbus police continue their investigation, the community mourns the loss of Taquajah Page, whose life was cut short in this devastating accident. The thoughts and prayers of many are with her family, as well as with the passengers who are recovering from their injuries. This accident once again highlights the critical need for road safety awareness and adherence to highway regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

For now, Interstate 270 remains a key focus of the Columbus Police Department as they work tirelessly to ensure safer driving conditions for all who travel through the area.
