Simpsonville, S.C. – Authorities in Greenville County are mobilizing an extensive search and rescue operation for an 8-year-old student who went missing from Bells Crossing Elementary School in Simpsonville. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office reported that Lionel Ramirez Cervantes was last seen on the school playground at approximately 11:10 a.m. on Thursday.
Lionel, who has autism and is potentially nonverbal, was last seen wearing a blue shirt. The search efforts, involving between 50 to 100 deputies along with K-9 units, are concentrated in the area surrounding the school. The sheriff’s office has also called on the local community to aid in the search by inspecting their properties and checking any surveillance footage, including from ring cameras.
Lieutenant Ryan Flood of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office provided details about the ongoing operation, emphasizing the urgency of the search due to Lionel’s nonverbal status, which could complicate communication with potential rescuers. “Given that Lionel may not be able to communicate effectively with strangers, it is crucial that we leave no stone unturned,” Lt. Flood remarked.
The mother of Lionel arrived at the scene promptly to assist in the search efforts. Deputies have specifically requested that volunteers do not join the search on foot as the K-9 units are operating based on scent trails, which could be disrupted by additional human activity. Instead, they are encouraging residents to remain in their vehicles and keep an eye out for any sign of Lionel.
Local law enforcement is working tirelessly to locate the missing child, deploying all available resources to ensure his safe return. The sheriff’s office has urged anyone with information regarding Lionel’s whereabouts to contact emergency services immediately by calling 911.
